It's Not Just Tik Tok - Your Smart Vibrator Could Be Spying On You Too

We've all seen the insane Wish ads on Facebook, or the unbelievebly cheap smart vibrator on Amazon that is all the buzz. Surely, a product that's desigend to bring you pleasure can't be evil like that, right? Well, bad news. Some sex toy brands online can actually compromise your phone's security, spying on you and stealing your data without you even knowing.

Sex toys aren't the only industry that falls prey to these cheap products. My brother once bought a smart watch on Amazon that does the exact same thing. Very conveniently, the Netflix account that we shared started to experience problems. I mean, the entire language was set to Russian and it took 2 days to recover the password! So much for binge watching The 100...

We know consumer safety is important, so we reached out to Internet Of Dongs on Twitter to help shed some light on how this works.

It Can Do WHAT?

These products often send your private information to completely unsecured servers, often in China. This means that every bit of data that you entered in that app, and even possibly data just sitting on your phone, is available for the Chinese government and possibly the whole world to see. Even the infamous social media network Tik Tok is under threat of being banned in the United States because of spying allegations.

Now that your email and password is available for the whole world to see, it only takes a bit of big brain energy for a hacker to take that data and try using it on other websites, maybe your Facebook or Amazon account!

Ever get those fake Netflix emails or text messages saying your account is frozen? Now you know why. Hackers will often add email obtained through data breaches or unsecured servers to a list and send out phishing emails trying to get you to login to a fake website to steal even more information from you. They can even trick you into downloading a program on your computer or phone that monitors your keystrokes without you even knowing, compromising even more accounts.

These applications also request access on your phone that isn't quite required, such as access to your pictures, read/write permissions, even your location! Why would an app need to do this? Good question, that raises even more concern to what your phone is sending to these unsecured servers.

How Can I Protect Myself?

Do Your Research

Internet Of Dongs has a website that provides information to consumers about their smart sex toys.

"Last thing I want is my face to be seal of approval on a vibrator box", said IOD. "My goal is to raise the bar across the industry and have them self monitor one another. Someone doesn't want to meet that bar, well then let the market decide. A vendor that had a security program and takes active measures to protect customers looks a heck of a lot better than one who does not"

You can visit Internet Of Dongs at https://internetofdon.gs/

If you're a manufacturer of a smart product, consider sending a sample to IOD so they can test your product for vulnerabilities. IOD has worked with many popular name brands like Lovense & OhMiBod, you can find the full list here.

Buy Smart

We aren't telling you to not buy from Wish or Amazon, although you won't get the proper support by industry titans like us when you order on Amazon! The best thing you can do when buying on sites that don't specialize in selling sex toys is to assess the risk of buying these products or consider not buying smart toys at all. Although, the We-Vibe Jive is hands down one of the best toys for remote use or public play.. Definitely worth trying at least once.

Of course, you'll usually never find these seemingly random brands in retail stores like Love Shop. Why? Because these products aren't exactly made by proper companies which explains the unsecured applications the poor customer service you're likely to receive if you experience problems with your toy. Problems happen, and at least with us, we can help diagnose the problem and exchange it for you jet fast if it comes to that!

We-Vibe and Lovense are two of the best companies that invest heavily in security for their devices and software. Mind you, data breaches and security problems happen to everyone but you're a lot less likely to be fallen victim to attacks like this when companies like We-Vibe actually care about user data and take responsibility for it.

Secure Your Passwords

Try your best to use unique passwords for each account. That way, if one account is stolen then they won't know the password to any other accounts! Also using two-step authentication on any platforms that support it can drastically increase security.

If you are someone that uses the same password across multiple accounts, you can use an online website called 'Have I been PWNED' that will tell you if your email has been involved with a data breach. This is usually just for very legitimate companies that report these breaches, or reports from watchdogs.
